5 Unique Spooky Traditions Worth Traveling For

October 29, 2021

< back to blog

This time of year has traditionally been seen as a chance for the human and spirit world to connect. Nowadays, we’re more likely to dress up in costumes and decorate our homes with pumpkins for Halloween, but different cultures around the world continue to honor their ancestors and mark the coming of a new season in a fascinating array of celebrations and rituals. Whilst Mexico’s ‘Day of the Dead’ is perhaps the best-known, here are some other unique traditions and festivals to discover just in time for ‘spooky season’!

1. Dia de Muertos, Mexico

One of the most famous celebrations, Mexico celebrates the ‘Day of the Dead’ on the 1st and 2nd of November. People decorate their homes and families gather at local graves to spend time in the presence of their passed loved ones. An explosion of colour and a celebration of life!

2. Samhain, Ireland

It’s thought that the modern celebration of Halloween stems from this ancient Gaelic festival! Samhain marks the beginning of winter and festivities begin at sunset on October 31st. Traditions include lighting bonfires and wearing costumes to ward off evil spirits.

3. Pitru Paksha, India

Pitru Paksha is a 16-day period in the Hindu lunar calendar when Hindus pay homage to their ancestors. This year it took place between September 20th and October 6th. During this period, it is common to make offerings of food and water to deceased relatives and conduct a range of elaborate rituals.

4. OBon, Japan

This Japanese Buddhist festival begins on the 10th day of the 7th lunar month and lasts for three days. During this time, it is tradition to honour the spirit of your ancestors by tidying their graves and gathering at the ancestral home. A special dance, called Bon Odori, is also performed.

5. Phi Ta Khon, Thailand

Taking place sometime between March and July, Phi Ta Khon is a vibrant festival celebrated in the town of Dan Sai in Loei Province. Festival-goers dress up in ghost masks and parade the streets ringing bells to wake up the spirits of deceased locals.

Which of these unique experiences sound like a blast to you? Drop me a comment! If you love spooky, fall decor check out my top picks here.
